A native of Portland, Michigan, Brian Massey was involved in music from an early age.  Through support and encouragement from his parents, he participated in band, choir and community and school theatre.  Due to inspiration from his sixth grade band director, Chad Hayes, he was then inspired to pursue a career in music education.  Thus after graduating from Portland High School in 2005, he attended Western Michigan University.

 

 

While at Western Michigan University, he was a member of the University Symphonic Band, University Concert Band, Bronco Marching Band, Pep Band, University Chorale, University Collegiate Singers, Collegium Musicum and Trombone Choir.  As a member of the Trombone Section of the University Symphonic Band he traveled to China in 2006 on tour.  In 2008, he traveled with the University Chorale and performed at the NCCO National Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Later that year, he recorded and performed the "1610 Vespro della Beata Vergine" by Claudio Monteverdi with the Florida Professional Choir "Seraphic Fire." He then traveled with Seraphic Fire in May 2010 to Florida and Mexico City to release their cd recording of the piece and perform concerts.  He was selected into Pi Kappa Lambda and was a member of Kappa Kappa Psi.  He graduated in 2010 from Western Michigan University Cum Laude with a double Bachelors Degree in Instrumental and Vocal Music Education.

 

After graduation, he was the Director of Bands at Reed City Area Public Schools from 2010-2011. He then was offered the position at Battle Creek Lakeview High School as the Director of Instrumental Music in Fall of 2011.   Since his tenure at Lakeview High School, his groups have earned both Division 1 and 2 ratings at the District and State MSBOA Festival.  He has been a staff member of the Michigan Ambassadors of Music where they take a group of Michigan Instrumentalists and Vocalists and tour Europe for two weeks.  He will be beginning his masters degree this summer at Michigan State University in Music Education.  He is the lead singer/keyboardist of "Slingstone Apostle" (www.reverbnation.com/slingstoneapostle) and plays keyboards at Radiant Church (www.radiantchurch.tv).He is married to his wife, Marissa and resides in Battle Creek, MI.  They gave birth to their son, Edric Wilbur Massey on May 30, 2014.
